LEEDS UNITED "A" BEAT VARSITY

Leeds University were outplayed by Leeds United "A" in a friendly fixture at Weetwood yesterday, and had to acknowledge defeat by 5 goals to 1. United monopolised play in the first half, but Robinson, in goal, ably supported by Shaw and Hallows, put up a stubborn resistance, and when the interval, arrived with the United leading by only a single goal, obtained by Thompson, the Varsity were well satisfied with their prospects. United, however, played better against the wind, and soon took command of the game. First Thompson converted a penalty, followed by Montgomery racing clean through the opposition to beat Robinson with a splendid drive. Keeping the ball close with short passes, the United continued to harass the Varsity defence, and Montgomery added two further goals. The Varsity never gave up struggling, and shortly before the end Hall succeeded in beating Hampson from close quarters.
